WATER TREATMENT FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

Envirogen designs water treatment for hydrogen production, delivering ultrapure water systems for electrolytic hydrogen projects, including green hydrogen. Each system is engineered around the source water, electrolyser or OEM water-quality requirements, flow, redundancy, footprint and wider project interfaces, from H₂ HydroPro packaged systems to larger bespoke treatment plants.

Envirogen works directly with hydrogen developers and operators, and alongside EPCs, engineering consultants, electrolyser OEMs, integrators and multidisciplinary project teams. Support can extend from water analysis and pilot testing through process design, UK manufacture, factory acceptance testing (FAT), modular or containerised delivery, commissioning, secure remote monitoring and lifecycle service.

DESIGN WATER INTO THE HYDROGEN PROJECT FROM THE START

For electrolytic hydrogen, water is a feedstock as well as a site utility. At least 9 litres of water are required to produce 1 kg of hydrogen before purification losses, cooling and other site demands are considered.

The project question is therefore not simply how much ultrapure water the electrolyser requires, but where the source water will come from, how variable it may be, what treatment is needed and how the overall water balance affects resilience, permitting and operating cost.

UK Government guidance identifies potable water, groundwater, surface water and seawater as potential sources and recommends that water quantity and source are considered early in project design. Water treatment should be developed alongside the electrolyser and wider project requirements from the outset, before plot space, utilities, storage, drainage and package interfaces become fixed, helping reduce late-stage redesign, rework and avoidable project cost.

Envirogen can engage with project teams at this early stage to review the source water, treatment requirements and wider package interfaces. Teams are also welcome to visit our UK manufacturing facility, meet the technical team and see systems being designed, assembled and tested before delivery.

FROM SOURCE WATER TO ULTRAPURE ELECTROLYSER FEED

There is no single treatment train for every hydrogen project. The required route depends on the source water, electrolyser technology, OEM specification, final water quality, capacity, recovery target and site constraints. Key considerations include:

  • Source water and pretreatment: Mains water, borehole or groundwater, surface water, suitable recovered water or seawater can present very different treatment requirements. Water analysis determines the filtration, softening, activated carbon, ultrafiltration, desalination or other pretreatment required before the high-purity stages.
  • Ultrapure electrolyser feed water: Reverse osmosis (RO), membrane degassing and continuous electrodeionisation (CEDI) can remove dissolved contaminants and produce consistently low-conductivity water, with final ion-exchange polishing where the project specification requires it.
  • Cooling and associated utilities: Cooling-water requirements can differ significantly from electrolyser feed water. Treating each duty to the quality it actually needs can avoid unnecessary treatment while protecting heat-transfer and supporting equipment.
  • Water recovery, reuse and discharge: High-recovery treatment, reuse of suitable streams and brine minimisation can reduce raw-water demand or discharge. Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) may also warrant assessment where site conditions and the commercial case justify it.

H₂ HYDROPRO: HYDROGEN-SPECIFIC RO-EDI WATER TREATMENT

H₂ HydroPro is Envirogen’s hydrogen water treatment system developed specifically for ultrapure hydrogen applications. The modular platform combines reverse osmosis, membrane degassing and continuous electrodeionisation, with additional polishing available where required.

Standard H₂ HydroPro packages support flows up to 15 m³/hour, with larger bespoke systems available for higher-capacity projects. Typical product performance includes conductivity below 0.10 µS/cm, while final design is matched to the electrolyser or project water specification rather than applying one universal target.

The RO-EDI route provides continuous demineralisation with no hazardous acid or caustic regeneration chemicals required in the core purification stage. Depending on the source water, suitable pretreatment can be integrated ahead of the system, while lead-lag mixed-bed polishing can provide a final quality barrier where required.

Skid-mounted and containerised configurations support compact, repeatable delivery and can be scaled as hydrogen production develops. The same high-purity platform can also support related hydrogen applications, including fuel-cell component manufacturing and selected cooling duties where the required water quality is appropriate.

WATER SOURCE, RECOVERY AND PROJECT RESILIENCE

As hydrogen projects scale, local water availability, competing demand, seasonal quality, abstraction or supply arrangements and discharge can all influence treatment design and raw-water demand.

Drawing on wider expertise in groundwater, surface-water and high-purity water treatment, Envirogen can assess these constraints alongside high-recovery reverse osmosis, suitable water recovery and reuse, brine minimisation and treatment of alternative water sources.

The objective is to engineer the water system around the whole hydrogen project, rather than treat the ultrapure-water skid as an isolated package.

PROJECT INTEGRATION FOR DEVELOPERS, EPCS AND ELECTROLYSER TEAMS

Hydrogen projects are delivered through connected developer, technology, engineering and construction teams. Envirogen can work within that wider project structure to define water-package interfaces, responsibilities and delivery requirements.

  • Developers and operators: source-water strategy, water balance, resilience, recovery opportunities, lifecycle cost and the route from pilot or demonstration scale to commercial production.
  • EPC and design-build teams: package definition, 3D layouts, utilities, controls, modularisation, FAT, sequencing, installation and commissioning.
  • Electrolyser OEMs and integrators: feed-water quality, flow and pressure requirements, final polishing and the interfaces between water treatment and the electrolyser package.
  • Engineering consultants and project partners: option development, water analysis, technical specification, pilot validation and treatment-route assessment.

PILOT TESTING AND LARGE-SCALE PROJECT DELIVERY

Where source-water quality or treatment performance is uncertain, pilot testing can validate the proposed route before full-scale investment. Trials can be used to assess feed variability, membrane performance, recovery, water quality and operating assumptions, generating data that supports design development and project costing.

LARGE-SCALE MODULAR PROJECT DELIVERY

Major hydrogen developments are complex infrastructure projects, where modular delivery can reduce on-site complexity, improve programme certainty and accelerate installation. Envirogen’s work with Align JV on HS2 demonstrates how this approach can be delivered at scale through complex contractor and consultancy teams.

A custom plug-and-play water treatment plant, designed for feed flows of up to 420 m³/hour, was operational within six months. The project combined off-site engineering, rapid deployment, remote monitoring and lifecycle support.

HS2 is an infrastructure project rather than a hydrogen installation, but the delivery model is directly relevant to large electrolyser developments and other time-sensitive hydrogen infrastructure.

HS2 is Britain’s biggest infrastructure project. The installation demonstrates Envirogen’s experience in modular-block water treatment, with flexible containerised systems supplied as single blocks or combined into multi-module plants to suit project needs.

LIFECYCLE SUPPORT FOR CRITICAL WATER QUALITY

Ultrapure water quality has to remain stable after commissioning. Envirogen’s national service network can support planned maintenance, membrane and polishing consumables, performance review, optimisation and secure remote monitoring, helping protect water quality, system availability and whole-life performance as the hydrogen plant moves from commissioning into long-term operation.
